Graduated in Physics in 1998 at Bologna University, Lina Vitali has been working at ENEA as a researcher since 2000.
Her research interests mainly focus on air pollution modeling.
In particular, she took part in the various steps of the design, development and application of the MINNI Atmospheric Modeling System, a national project leaded by ENEA on behalf of the Italian Ministry for the Environment (currently Ministry for Ecological Transition). MINNI provides policy makers with a scientific tool for the assessments of costs and effectiveness of emission reduction policies.
More in detail, in the framework of MINNI applications, she is involved in the validation of modeling results through statistical comparison with monitoring data. In this regard, she is attending FAIRMODE initiatives and testing the Delta Tool, the validation tool proposed by FAIRMODE, in order to harmonize validation techniques and set quality objectives for modeling applications, especially when carried out under the European Air Quality Directives.
In the framework of a Cooperation Agreement for starting up the Italian National Network of Special Purpose Monitoring Stations, funded by the Italian Ministry for the Environment, she coordinated scientific research relating spatial representativeness assessment of the network stations. Her scientific investigation on spatial representativeness is currently going on in the context of FAIRMODE activities.
She carried out several environmental impact studies of industrial plants, focusing on high spatial resolution simulations, by means of a Lagrangian particle dispersion model.
She developed M-TraCE, a new tool for calculating backward trajectories using high-resolution wind fields produced by the MINNI meteorological model.
She was involved in the project “Renewable energy potential maps for Lesotho”, funded by the Italian Ministry for the Environment, under a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Governments of Italy and Lesotho. The scope of the project was to produce hydrological, wind and solar energy potential maps for Lesotho, to support the Government in the planning and development of renewable energy exploitation in the country.
